Actor David Prowse, best known for physically portraying the role of the antagonist Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at the age of 85 following a brief illness, according to his agent.

Prowse’s agent Thomas Bowington confirmed the news of the actor’s death on early Saturday morning to The Guardian.

“It’s with great regret and heart-wrenching sadness for us and million of fans around the world, to announce that our client Dave Prowse MBE has passed away at the age of 85,” Bowington said in a statement.

Jason Joiner, an events producer who worked with Prowse, also announced the death on a Facebook page dedicated to the actor.

“Dave was dedicated to meeting the fans for decades and lots of fans’ first ever guest they met was Dave in the early days of Comic Cons and collators’ events. Dave was larger than life and he will be so very much missed. Our love and thoughts go out to his family,” Joiner said.

Mark Hamill, who played Prowse’s on-screen son Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, paid rich tributes to the late actor on Twitter.

“So sad to hear David Prowse has passed. He was a kind man & much more than Darth Vader. Actor-Husband-Father-Member of the Order of the British Empire-3 time British Weightlifting Champion & Safety Icon the Green Cross Code Man. He loved his fans as much as they loved him. #RIP (sic)” Hamill wrote.

Formerly a bodybuilder, Prowse had featured in a series of roles as monsters and villains before being invited by Star Wars director George Lucas to audition for the roles of Vader and the endearing Chewbacca.

The actor chose to try out for the part of Vader, who went on to become one of the most iconic villains in popular culture, and when asked why, he replied, “Everyone remembers the villain.”

Prowse was the man behind the Vader mask for much of the Sith Lord’s screen time and reputedly even got to speak his lines on set, though his west country accent was dubbed over with those of American actor James Earl Jones in post-production, and many of the fight scenes featured British Olympic fencer Bob Anderson.

Prowse once claimed he was initially told that he would be seen and heard at the end of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, the final film in the original Star Wars trilogy, when Vader’s mask was removed. Instead, British stage actor Sebastian Shaw was used by Lucas.

Prowse and Lucas later fell out, leading to Prowse being banned from official Star Wars activities in 2010.

According to IMDB, Prowse was born in Bristol, UK in 1935 and raised by his mother and never knew his father. He developed a passion for bodybuilding and weight training in his early teens and competed in Mr Universe competitions, where he became friends with Hollywood action star Arnold Schwarzenegger and actor Lou Ferrigno.

Prowse won the British heavyweight weightlifting championship three times and was selected to represent England at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia.

He also shredded phone books under the stage-name Jack the Ripper.

Prowse made his feature film debut with 1967’s Casino Royale, in which he played Frankenstein’s Monster.

He went on to pursue acting further in films such as Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, a 1971 dystopian crime film, and many horror films from the UK-based Hammer Film Productions. Prowse personally trained Christopher Reeve for the role of Superman in 1978.

Prior to his role as Vader, Prowse had established himself as a prominent figure in British culture as the first Green Cross Code man, a character used in British road safety advertising aimed at children. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2000.

Nadodikkattu (transl. Gypsy Breeze) is a 1987 Indian Malayalam-language satiricalcomedy film directed by Sathyan Anthikad and written by Sreenivasan based on a story by the Siddique–Lal duo. The story revolves around two impecunious young men, Ramdas (Mohanlal) and Vijayan (Sreenivasan) who not being able to find any job in Kerala, plan to immigrate to Dubai to make their fortunes, but get deceived and end up in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Nadodikkattu drew upon relevant social factors affecting Kerala of the 1980s such as widespread unemployment and poverty.^[2]

The film also features Shobhana, Thilakan, Innocent, Mamukkoya, Captain Raju, Meena, Kundara Johny, Janardhanan, Ajith Kollam, and Sankaradi in supporting roles, along with cameo appearances from Seema, I. V. Sasi, and M. G. Soman as themselves. Critics consider the film represents popular Malayalam cinema at its satirical best and established the Mohanlal-Sreenivasan combination as one of its most memorable and bankable cinematic pairs. The story, screenplay and characters have achieved cult status.^[2]

The film was produced by Casino Productions, a production company owned by Century Kochumon, Mohanlal, I. V. Sasi, Seema, and Mammootty. It gave way to two sequels—Pattanapravesham (1988) and Akkare Akkare Akkare (1990) directed by Priyadarshan.^[2] The film was remade in Tamil as Katha Nayagan (1988)^[3] and in Kannada as Tenali Rama. Plot elements of Nadodikkattu were also used in the 2006 Hindi film Bhagam Bhag. The film was also remade in Telugu as Chennapatnam Chinnollu in which Chandra Mohan played the role of Vijayan and Raja Sekhar (Telugu Actor) played the role of Mohan Lal.

Plot[edit]

Ramdas / Dasan and Vijayan are employed as ill-paid peons. A commerce graduate, and proud of that, Dasan frequently vents his frustration in having to serve lesser qualified superiors and having to settle with lesser than what he feels he deserves in life. Vijayan is his less educated roommate and sole friend. Their relationship is one full of comic tension, with Dasan adopting a superior stance on the account of his education and good looks, which fiercely rattles Vijayan. Several comic situations later in the film borrow from this aspect of their characters. Dasan frequently bosses over Vijayan to do all the household chores.

Dasan and Vijayan, hopeful of getting a better job, as soon as the new managing director joins their company, wait for him to take charge. However, one day, on their way to work, they get involved in an unnecessary altercation with an unknown person. Dasan, in order to grab attention from a lady, verbally abuses the person and pushes him into a puddle of rainwater. Vijayan punctures his car tires. But when they reach the workplace, they find out that the person that they had picked the fight with is their new managing director. Both vanish from the workplace and reappear on the next day in disguise; Dasan wearing dark sunglasses and Vijayan wearing a long beard. Both try to convince their supervisor that they were seriously ill the previous day, but they are made to report to the new managing director. They manage to fool him initially and start work but the managing director soon finds out the truth from old office photographs and both get thrown out from work.

Being jobless, their landlord convinces them to borrow a loan from a bank to buy two cows. Dasan and Vijayan, upbeat about the new business, start dreaming of a bright future. However, they soon find out that the cows yield very little milk and the business fails. The bank contacts them for defaulting on the loan repayments. To escape, Vijayan sells the cows and arranges for them to go to Dubai (in United Arab Emirates) with whatever money they get. Gafoor is an agent who promises to take them to the Persian Gulf. Gafoor explains to them that his uru (boat) sailing to California will be diverted past the Dubai coast for them. Gafoor also instructs them to wear traditional Arabic clothing thawb to fool the authorities. Dasan and Vijayan once again start dreaming about the bright and luxurious life ahead.

On reaching the sea shore, both change into the Arabic attire. Two strangers (Johny and Ajith Kollam) follow Dasan and Vijayan and forcefully exchange their suitcases. Confused, Dasan and Vijayan start exploring the city. They are surprised to see no Arabs in the city and soon find signboards in Tamil. They realize that they have been cheated by Gafoor who has off loaded them in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Dasan and Vijayan check the suitcase and find drugs inside. They contact local police and hand over the suitcase. Meanwhile, the strangers who are actually gang members of Ananthan Nambiar, a smuggler and underworld don, find out that they were mistaken. Ananthan Nambiar believes that those men in Arabic dress were Crime Investigation Department officers in disguise.

Dasan and Vijayan with the help of Dasan's friend Balan get jobs at Ananthan Nambiar's office. Dasan meets his colleague Radha (Shobana) who turns out to be their neighbour as well. But soon Dasan and Vijayan get fired by Ananthan Nambiar who believes that they are undercover officers. On the road again, Vijayan tries to get a chance to act in films. He visits noted film director I. V. Sasi's home and meets Sasi's wife and actress Seema.

Dasan starts a small push-cart vegetable business with Radha's help. A minor romance develops between Dasan and Radha. Meanwhile, Ananthan Nambiar hires contract killer Pavanayi to murder Dasan and Vijayan. Pavanayi arrives at Chennai airport with a briefcase containing his ‘tools of trade’. He opens the box and displays various options for killing the targets: a bomb, a gun, a set of arrows and even a traditional Malappuram dagger. Very soon Pavanayi becomes an object of ridicule because of his boasting nature. However, Pavanayi dies while trying to kill Dasan and Vijayan. This irks Ananthan Nambiar even more and makes him all the more paranoid about these two 'officers'.

As the story proceeds to the climax, Dasan and Vijayan are called to a rundown factory by one of their other enemies, Kovai Venkatesan, a well-connected businessman with political aspirations for an ostensible meeting, where he plans to kill them. Dasan and Vijayan find themselves surrounded by Ananthan Nambiar's gang as well, the latter also having selected the location to finalize a drug deal. However, the both gangs mistake each other as enemies and a mixed fight breaks out. Dasan and Vijayan manage to lock all the others inside the building as the police arrive and arrest everyone.

The movie concludes as Dasan and Vijayan gets selected into the Tamil Nadu police as Crime Investigation Department officers and they along with Radha drive away in a jeep.

The film was produced by Casino Productions, a film production house co-owned by Century Kochumon, Mohanlal, I.V. Sasi, Seema and Mammootty, on a shoe-string budget of Rs 17 lakh.^[2]

The characters of Dasan and Vijayan were replicated from a story formulated by famous director duo Siddique and Lal who were working as assistant directors then. Sathyan Anthikkad discussed these characters to Sreenivasan who later developed them into a screen play.^[6] It was later revealed that Sathyan Anthikkad asked Sreenivasan to give a different treatment to the climax, thus they were able to come up with an agreeable climax for the script than that to the first version. Later they had creative differences during the same climax shooting and even stopped talking to each other. However, being best of friends, they re-united during dubbing of the film.^[2]

The film received excellent reviews.

The film was a huge box office grosser doing well not only in Kerala but other neighbouring states and the Persian Gulf as well. The story and screenplay is considered as one of the classics of mainstream Malayalam films, portraying a cross-section of Kerala's social issues at the time, primarily the struggle of unemployed Malayali youths and the means they pursue to find employment, such as seeking job opportunities in the Persian Gulf region, the scramble for formal educational qualifications (reflected through the character Ramdas' boasting about his graduate degree in commerce with First Class), etc., through amusing comic dialogues. These dialogues are still remembered fondly by Malayalis today. This movie has been considered as the best example of the Mohanlal-Sreenivasan on-screen combination, spawning two sequels with the same duo, Pattanapravesham and Akkare Akkare Akkare, as well as a spin-off film called Mr. Pavanayi 99.99.

The movie is considered as one of the most popular Malayalam movies of all time. Even after more than 25 years, the movie draws huge audience whenever it is telecast on television channels. 'The secret of the duo still being alive in the Malayali's consciousness may be because it's a story of two unemployed youngsters told using a humorous narrative. Unemployment was one of the biggest issues and migration to greener pastures was typical of Malayali experience. This has continued to the current decade. So, the audience has no problem relating to Dasan and Vijayan,' says Sathyan Anthikkad, who directed the movie. According to Anthikkad, it was the convergence of a script-writer, director and actors at the subtlest level that resulted in its success.^[7]

'Comedies were not much in demand here before films such as Nadodikattu happened. Lal and I were instrumental in popularising comedies to a great extent.' says Siddique.^[7]
